In purse seining, fish are surrounded by a large seine net, which is drawn together, "pursed," and hauled aboard. Commercial fishing began in Alaska during the 1870s. It is the third most important sector of Alaska's economy, and ranks first in the nation in both quantity and commercial value. Alaska is also the number one producer of wild salmon in the world.
