Alaska Fireweed Picture (ID: 213)

Print Title: Alaska Fireweed (Chamerion angustifolium)

Greeting Card Caption: Fireweed is probably the best-known wildflower in Alaska, and dense stands of this beautiful flower grow throughout much of the state. Fireweed blooms begin mid-cluster during mid to late summer, with each successive flower blooming just above the one before it. As the last flowers bloom at the top of the flower cluster, the earliest blooms seed and turn to "cotton". When the fireweed turns to cotton, Alaskans say there are about six weeks until winter begins.
