Sockeye Salmon Photo (ID: 130)

Print Title: Fuzzy Fish - Decaying Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka)

Greeting Card Caption: Sockeye salmon (a.k.a. blueback or red salmon) are anadromous, meaning they migrate from sea to freshwater systems to spawn. Like most Pacific salmon, sockeye salmon die soon after spawning. The decay of spawned-out adults plays an important role in the survival of their progeny by delivering marine-derived nutrients to otherwise sterile systems.
