Wolf Trap Lighthouse Photograph (ID: 241)Print Title: Wolf Trap Sunrise Greeting Card Caption: This Virginia lighthouse marks Wolf Trap Spit Shoal in the Chesapeake Bay. The shoal was dubbed "Wolf Trap," because the 350-ton HMS Wolfe was stranded here for three months during 1691. The shoal was first marked by a lightship in 1821, then by a screw-pile light in 1870. The screw-pile light was carried away by ice in January 1893 and replaced by the current caisson tower. Wolf Trap was first lit during September 1894, was automated during 1971 and is currently operational. The light's focal plane stands 52 feet above mean high water. Photograph Availability
