Greeting Card Caption: The brown bear, a.k.a. "grizzly", is one of the largest North American land mammals. The term "brown bear" commonly refers to members of this species found in coastal areas where salmon is the primary food source. Bears found inland and in northern habitats are often called "grizzlies". Mature males weigh 500-900 pounds, and extremely large individuals may reach 1,400 pounds. Females weigh half to three-quarters as much. Wild brown bears typically live 20-25 years and have been known to reach 34 years of age.
