Photo of Whales Bubble Net Feeding (ID: 116)Print Title: Humpback Whales Bubble Net Feeding (Megaptera novaeangliae) Greeting Card Caption: To witness bubble net feeding among Humpback Whales is to witness one of nature's most spectacular events. In this form of cooperative feeding, whales encircle schooling fish with a "bubble net" of exhaled air. The whales quickly swim upward forcing fish to the surface. With jaws agape, the fish are captured along with 500 to 1,000 gallons of water in the whale's mouth, which features expandable ventral throat pleats. Water is then filtered through baleen plates that hang from the upper jaw. Adults rarely allow juveniles to participate in this form of feeding. The whale lobtailing in the foreground is a juvenile.
