Picture of a Whitetail Deer Jumping a Fence (ID: 105)

Print Title: Whitetail Buck Jumping Fence (Odocoileus virginianus)

Greeting Card Caption: Whitetail deer are the most widely distributed large land mammal in North America. Bucks begin to grow antlers in April or May. A short-haired skin called "velvet" protects the antlers as they grow and is rubbed-off during August or September when the bone structure hardens. Primarily a tool for establishing dominance, antlers are shed following the breeding season, and the growth cycle begins again.
