Humpback Whale Picture (ID: 117)

Print Title: Humpback Whales Lunge Feeding (Megaptera novaeangliae)

Note Card Caption: This form of feeding appears similar to bubble net feeding, but the whales do not cooperatively encircle schooling fish with a "bubble net" of exhaled air. In lunge feeding, one or more whales swim upward with jaws agape. Fish and krill are captured along with 500 to 1,000 gallons of water in the whale's lower jaw, which features expandable throat pleats. Water is then strained out through baleen that hangs from the upper jaw.
